August 25th
Another rainy day off in Portland. It rained off and on all day, sometimes hard and more rain is forecasted for tonight and tomorrow. Rain this intense and prolonged is unusual, but not entirely unheard of, for August. We tried to call and book a cabin at Olallie Lake for the night, but their office was closed and there was no response from the other phone numbers. So we stayed another day with the Sonfleiths, enjoying their home and hospitality.
We took advantage of their garage to re-seam seal the tent. Hopefully this will help keep the water on the outside.
And in one more attempt to prepare for more rain we bought new trash compacter bags to line the clothes bag, the sleeping bag stuff sack and the backpacks. With two layers of trash compactor bags and a pack cover we are doing all we can to keep vital things dry. Perhaps it sounds almost paranoid, but better paranoid and dry than careless and wet.
We also downloaded photos from the digital camera to CDs so that we could reuse the memory cards, ate and drank and the time passed all too quickly.
I have been very pleased with the digital camera I’m using, a Pentax Optio 33wr. The pictures are great and it has lived up to its claims of being weather and impact resistant. It’s a sturdy camera with great optics!
After these chores and grocery shopping the day was the usual “eat and drink as much as we can while we’re in town” kind of day…..
