Trip Report – July 18 Augusta
We went into the Bob Marshall Wilderness area (“The Bob”) anticipating potential problems with still lingering snow, raging creeks, and tough terrain. The Bob was challenging, but not as brutal as we expected.
True, we had a number of icy streams to ford, but few were more than knee high. We carried the ice axes but never had to get them out on this stretch. Oh, there was plenty of snow to negotiate, but none of it was steep.
Yes, and the Bob was wild – we saw two herds of Mountain Goats, a herd of Elk, a brown colored Black Bear, and lots of White Tailed deer. But instead of nature’s raw fury, we found a few small challenges and plenty of beauty and solitude.
The highlight had to be “the Walls”, the North Wall and the Chinese Wall. They are reason enough to carry 8 days of food.
We still have a long way to go, but we are beginning to get into the rhythm of the trail life. The Carrot’s trail appetite is kicking in.
The town of Augusta MT is small, friendly and well stocked with burgers, beer and ice cream. No internet or cell phone service, so it’s back to the good old payphone for communication. A relaxing pace for a day off.
