Our Adventures
OUR TRAIL NAMES: In 1997 we thru-hiked the 2,150 mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in approximately 6 months from early April to early October. During this hike we adopted “Trail Names”, as is the custom among long distance hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Deb became “Walking Carrot” because her love of carrots meant we never hiked without them in our food bag. I adopted “Nowhere Man” in response to the inevitable question about where we were from.
You see, we had quit our jobs and moved out of our apartment in Walnut Creek California, leaving most of our stuff in a storage area nearby; our “legal” mailing address was forwarded to my parents in Colorado, who also shipped our resupply boxes; our voice mail was set up with an Arizona area code; we left our car in Pennsylvania; and after the AT we planned on further travels for at least another 8 months, having no idea where we would “settle down” afterwards. Hence, we truly were from “Nowhere, man”.
