Glossary of British Terms
The following is a very brief glossary of certain British terms that will help make sense of the descriptions for some photos, as well as the terms found frequently in some guidebooks, maps, and web links. Its just a beginning….

Beck (mostly in Northern England) | Stream |
Col | Hill or mountain pass |
Dale | Open valley |
Fell (mostly in Northern England) | Large hill or mountain, or hillside or mountain side |
Force (mostly in Northern England) | Waterfall |
Gill | Small steep sided valley |
Moor | High open rolling treeless area, frequently covered in heather and shrouded in fog |
Pike (mostly in Northern England) | Peak |
Ramble | A relatively short, non-strenuous walk |
Rover | Walker |
Stile | Steps allowing people to pass over a wall or fence |
Thwaite | Clearing in a forest |
Vale | Large open flat area |
Lager | Beer |
Ale | Real beer, not to be confused with American ales |
Bitters | Real beer , no equivalent term or product found in America |
English Breakfast | Way too much fried food for more than one day a week |
Elevens | A civilized late morning break for tea |
Black Pudding | You really don’t want to know |
Bwich (Welsh) | Mountain Pass |
Llyn (Wales) | Lake |
Pen (Wales) | Headland Or Peak |
