Baja Bums
Nowhere Man, aka “Phil”. Two months of continued hair growth finally resulted in Phil’s first pony tail. With a full beard, layers upon layers of mud on the car and the start of the war on Iraq we were somewhat concerned about getting back across the border. Not to worry……our return across the border took less than 15 minutes (mainly waiting in line). The customs officials were less thorough in searching the car than any of the 15 or so Mexican Military checkpoints we encountered. Which was good considering the case of Mexican wine that we were,
Walking Carrot, aka “Deb” returned with a classic “Teva Tan”. The Carrot’s search for fun in the warm sun was rewarded with only two evenings warm enough to wear shorts. She was very glad we brought along a full flock of fleece. The Carrot’s Spanish and appetite for Mexican food improved considerably.
Baja Verde, aka “Rick Green”. Early morning man and coffee maker extraordinaire! Without Rick we would never have made it up at 4am in the dark to be able to break camp and be on the water by sunrise, a necessary evil sometimes to be able to paddle in calm winds and slack tides. Rick has been a friend and fellow adventurer for many years, joining us on the Yukon River in 2000 and the San Juan River in 2001. His many years of experience in hiking, kayaking and fishing in the Baja make Rick the point man leading and planning this adventure. Rick is now off on a 4 month road trip around the US to rediscover his romantic half, Eloise, and watch some other birds as well…..
Jim, Rick’s acquaintance from Montana. Jim and Rick met in Mongolia. But the desert is a harsh environment, as was the front seat of small pick up for 2 months – the Baja proved to be the final resting place for their friendship………….Jim who???
