June 14th
Layover day in town, time for the typical chores. On the scale at the drugstore I weigh in at 177, about 17 pounds lighter than at the start of the hike. Not bad, but in ’94 I had lost almost 30 pounds by this point. I attribute the difference to all the additional trail angels, town stops and friends meeting us with food and beer. The Carrot has only lost about 1 or 2 pounds, which is good, as she can’t afford to lose much more. We ply her with ice cream in multiple forms today.
Late afternoon clouds build up over the mountains looking very ominous. It’s nice to watch them from town. As evening thundershowers sweep through Lone Pine we know that up in the high mountain valleys as well as the ridges and passes above it must be snowing. The storm front passes so quickly though that neither rain nor snow amount to much.
